Mission
The 4K for Cancer is dedicated to empowering young adults in uniting communities across the country in the fight against cancer through community service and support.
Service
Each year we activate hundreds of young adults from college campuses around Baltimore and the United States to become involved in the fight against cancer.
This service takes many forms – participation in our YACS (young adult cancer support) campus groups; cooking dinner for cancer patients and their caregivers at the Baltimore Hope Lodge; adopting cancer patients from the Ulman Cancer Fund Young Adult Navigation Centers at the University of Maryland Greenebaum Cancer Center and the Sidney Kimmel Comprehensive Cancer Center at Johns Hopkins; and during our 70 day, 4000 mile cross country bike rides.
The 90 plus college students who cycle with us each summer embark on more than just a cross country bike ride; they also support our host communities by visiting cancer patients, taking part in community dinners, and giving cancer awareness presentations.
Whether our volunteers are cooking dinner at the Hope Lodge or spending 70 days riding across the United States – they are all committed to the idea of making sure that cancer patients and their families are not alone on their cancer journeys.
Cancer Support
To join the 4K as a cyclist, riders must each raise a minimum of $4,500. The 4K have raised over $1,000,000 since our first ride in 2002. Money donated to our riders goes toward supporting various programs that offer direct services to cancer patients.
Our goal is to identify and fund programs that have an immediate impact on the lives of cancer patients and their caregivers. On the column to the right you can see a list of our charitable giving in 2011.
Our merger with the Ulman Cancer Fund now allows us to offer peer mentoring, support groups, college scholarships, and navigation services to young adults ages 18 to 40 who have been affected by cancer.
