Joanna Wang graduated from Washington University in St. Louis. In the summer of 2014 she is riding with a group of college students on a 70 day, 4000 mile bike ride from Baltimore to Portland.
What is your connection to the cancer community?
Cancer has the powerful effect of changing one’s life. My father, uncle, and aunt’s lives were changed when their mother, Zhang Qiao Ying, passed away from cancer in the 80’s. At the time, father was still a college student, so I can only imagine the impact it had on him and his family. Cancer has robbed me of my grandmother before I was even born, so I will only know her from the pictures and memories of her that still live on. I am riding in honor of my grandmother and I hope that my commitment to serve the cancer community would make her proud.
Why are you traveling over 4000 miles this summer with the 4k?
I want to dedicate this year to combining my passion for cycling and serving others by showing my support for the cancer community. By riding over 4000 miles across the country, I hope to inspire those affected by cancer to keep fighting. My challenge of riding cross country is small compared to the hardships endured by cancer patients, but I hope that I can make a positive difference in their lives. I hope to change lives, inspire, and be inspired. I know that after this experience, my life will definitely be changed!
