Meet Emily Adelson

Emily Adelson

Emily is a junior at the Washington University in St. Louis. In the summer of 2012 she is riding with a group of college students on a 70 day, 4000+ mile bike ride from Baltimore to Seattle.

What is your connection with the cancer community?

My grandmother is a breast cancer survivor. My grandmother is the most joyous, bubbly, and hilarious woman I know. I was a sophomore in high school when she was diagnosed with cancer. The year that she was sick, she became a different person. I remember feeling like I was watching chemotherapy suck the joy from her. We missed her so much. I am so thankful that she beat cancer, my family is incredibly lucky. I wish I had been there for her more when she was suffering, to cheer her up and remind her not to lose hope. Through our family’s experience, I have learned the importance of communicating cancer awareness. The more we know about cancer, the more preventative measures we can take, and the more support we can provide to cancer patients.

Why are you riding the 4K for Cancer?

To me, the 4k across the nation is the ultimate challenge. It has been a dream of mine to bike cross-country, and this organization seems like the most meaningful way I can accomplish this. I am convinced that a summer experience like the 4k for Cancer would change my life and make me a better person. Support groups for cancer bring people together from all walks of life, because so many are affected by this awful disease. Through this program, I know I would meet hundreds of amazing and inspiring individuals that I can learn so much from. I want to participate in 4k for cancer to show my support for cancer patients and my belief in the fight against cancer. 70 days of grueling rides doesn’t even begin to compare to the long, hard battle that cancer patients face, but I know that by showing our support we can bring hope and encouragement to people afflicted across the country.
