Meet Cassie Tarakajian

Cassie Tarakajian

Cassie is a senior at the Johns Hopkins University. In the summer of 2012 she is riding with a group of college students on a 70 day, 4000+ mile bike ride from Baltimore to San Francisco.

What is your connection with the cancer community?

Until recently, the cancer community had not made a great impact on my life. Last semester, a girl in my sorority, Katie Oppo, died of small-cell ovarian cancer. She was only a sophomore in college and barely had any time to fight it. Her death was a huge reality check for me because I realized that this is a disease that can affect anyone—even those who are just beginning their adult lives. She made a huge impact on the Phi Mu community, which many girls were able to turn into something positive. I was inspired by the generosity and eagerness to help of those closest to her, who took the lead and organized many events to raise money to fight cancer. Now that I am a member of the cancer community, I want to dedicate myself to fighting this battle. And hopefully I can continue the chain and inspire others.

Why are you riding the 4K for Cancer?

I'm at a new, exciting point in my life, transitioning from one phase to another. Therefore I think it is a great time to put the next phase of my life on hold and dedicate myself fully to the 4K. I have never done long-distance biking before, so I want to challenge myself and do something I would normally never do on my own. I'm excited to see the whole country and make connections to the members of the cancer community, by sharing stories and support. I cannot wait to be part of the 4K team, making lifetime friendships. I want to make an impact in a meaningful way. I know that the journey will not be easy, but I know that it will be worth it—not only will I help others, it will make me a better person.
