We are currently in the process of accepting applications for service learning internships for the 2011 – 2012 school year. Interns will be based out of our new offices at The Foundry on Fort, 921 E. Fort Street, Baltimore, Maryland. The internship service year will begin in September and conclude in May. Internship positions are unpaid but are eligible for academic credit via your university.
Interns will be involved in four major program areas: Campus Outreach and Volunteer Recruitment, Community Engagement and Service, Ride Logistics and Public Relations.
Campus Outreach and Volunteer Recruitment
Interns will assist our Volunteer Maryland Coordinator (VMC) in engaging and activating student groups at colleges and universities in Maryland to get involved in the fight against cancer thorough education and service to individuals battling cancer. Interns will work on Cancer 4000, engaging volunteers in a 4000 mile, one day bike ride with the goal of bring awareness to young adult cancer and to providing scholarship money to young adults who are battling cancer. Interns will also work with 4K for Cancer staff to develop better systems for engaging volunteer student groups.
Community Engagement and Service
Interns will assist our Community Engagement Director (CED) to engage college students and the general community to build awareness of the early warning signs of cancer and build a support network for people who are on their own cancer journey. Specifically, interns will help develop a portable curriculum aimed at increasing awareness of the early warning signs of cancer and it’s treatment. The intern will assist in the delivery of the curriculum on local college campuses and train student peer mentors to deliver the curriculum. In addition, interns will help the CED develop and facilitate a strategy to engage residents of rural communities. This includes designing and managing overnight ‘mission based’ bike rides to rural communities outside of Baltimore.
Ride Logistics
Interns will assist our Program Director in managing and organizing our summer, cross country bike rides. This includes planning cycling friend/safe bike routes, developing relationships with host communities, and networking with bike shops and cycling organizations to provide logistical support to our riders during the summer. Interns will also develop partnerships with corporations and business to provide financial support and in kind donations (food, gear, etc) to 4K for Cancer.
Graphic Design, Public Relations, Website Development, Social Media
Interns will assist our Program Director in managing and organizing our summer, cross country bike rides. This includes planning cycling friend/safe bike routes, developing relationships with host communities, and networking with bike shops and cycling organizations to provide logistical support to our riders during the summer. Interns will also develop partnerships with corporations and business to provide financial support and in kind donations (food, gear, etc) to 4K for Cancer.
To become an intern, applicants must submit a resume and a written cover letter detailing their background and desire for working with a cancer centric non-profit. Staff will review the application and invite applicants for an interview.
